Implants
Implants are a way of screwing teeth into a patients jaw bones. This is often done under sedation and is normally painless. Patients sometimes have a little pain afterwards for a day or two.
Basically, a titanium bolt is screwed into your bone and a crown placed on top. It is a relatively successful procedure and often used to replace a missing tooth rather than using a bridge. To place a bridge, it is often necessary to drill at least one natural tooth. The advantage of an implant is that it is not necessary to drill any teeth. Implants are however considerably more expensive than bridges.
Implants can also be used to fasten dentures in position. Often two implants can be placed in the lower jaw and a denture fastened on to them. This results in a very stable denture.
