Jaw Joint Pain and a Clicking Jaw
This condition is known as Temporomandibular Dysfunction Syndrome.
Some people experience clicking jaw joints. (These joints are just in front of your ears).
Sometimes this clicking does not bother patients but often it can be painful and distressing.
Sometimes the jaw can lock. This is obviously distressing.
There are numerous treatments for this condition which usually involve the stabilisation of the ligament inside the jaw joint. This can usually be achieved by simple jaw exercises or construction of an acrylic bite plane.
TMJ Dysfunction and splints
Patient E
This patient needed a Tanner appliance to adjust his bite. These splints are often worn for several weeks and are a means of “resting” the jaw ligament.
