Tooth Whitening

As people age their teeth darken. It is possible to semi-permanently lighten up your teeth by up to ten years by using tooth whitening techniques. It is not necessary to drill teeth and therefore no injections are necessary.

Q: What types of treatment are there?
A: There are two types of treatments available.

"In surgery technique"
"Home application technique"

For the "In surgery technique" your gums will be coated with a special protective layer, and the whitening gel is then placed onto your teeth. This whitening gel is activated under intense light. This is repeated as necessary (usually two or three times) and the whole process is completed in one hour.

For the "Home application technique" you will need to wear custom trays containing whitening gel, for two to three hours a day depending on how dark your teeth are.

Q: What are the side effects?
A: There will probably be some initial tooth sensitivity, especially with the "In surgery technique".
This is due to the extra strength of the whitening gel used here. However this should wear off after a couple of weeks.

Q: Is it possible to whiten a single tooth?
A: Yes and it is much cheaper and less destructive than crowning it. This darkened tooth will probably be dead or root filled. It will be necessary, however, to drill the tooth from the back of it to make a hole where whitening gel can be placed. With this technique the whitening gel is placed inside the tooth differing from the normal bleaching techniques where gel is placed outside. The whole process should take less than one hour and is usually painless.

At our surgery we can give you much more detailed and explanation and advice about treatments but patients are encouraged to do their own research on the internet as well.
